"Utopia"

I’ve just watched „Utopia” and you know what? I almost wish that Jack was regular Doctor’s companion. Even if it meant there was no “Torchwood”. But then I though of Ianto… (go figure) and decided, it’s better to have Jack on DW as a sort of Christmas treat and have “Torchwood” for the rest of the time. Perfect combination *vbg*

Oh.My.God. What a fabulous episode it was. I think the best of the 3 season and really not just because Jack’s back (really *g*).

I loved the initial tension between Jack and the Doctor. And I think it was fantastic idea, to make the Doctor deliberately left Jack behind. I know that some people think it’s cruel and OC for Doctor, but I think it actually fits the character perfectly. We know the Doctor can be ruthless at times, we saw it with both of them (can’t say about the classic series, because I don’t know it). But it’s only when he thinks it’s absolutely necessary. He’s not human, after all. And although he often acts like one, he’s got his own moral code and sticks to it.
I think Jack understands him better than anyone (maybe because he was born in 51 century, maybe because of what he’s been through). The scene in radiation chamber was one of the best of all three seasons. And it’s so true what RTD said in “Confidential” – to make men talk, they need to be in a life threatening situation, with a ticking clock and door between them. It was just brilliant and I doubt it would have work if they talked in any other circumstances. And the look the Doctor and Jack exchanged at the end of it, was the best closing "line" possible.

It was amazing, seeing Jack slip back into his “old” self, down to coming on to everyone / thing that breathes…  “God, I missed this” – we did, too, Jack, we did too.  And I bet so did the Doctor.

Now, it was pretty clear, that Martha was mostly a “wallpaper” through most of the episode. I wish I could feel for her, but really can’t. It’s almost the end of the season and through all of it, I was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt. I actually liked her in the first ep, and in few other moments. But I think she’s way to clingy and dependable, when it comes to the Doctor. All this "unrequited love" theme makes me itchy.  I know I shouldn’t compare her to Rose, but that’s another thing I can’t stop doing. At the end of first season, the Doctor (already) treated Rose as mush as someone equal, as it was possible for a human companion. I don’t get the same vibe when it comes to Martha. Yeah, I know she got to save his life, but it takes more than this. And with Jack on board again, it was just him, working with the Doctor, while Martha was left to push a button. It says all to me.

Derek Jacobi… What a fantastic actor he is. I wish one day I’ll have a chance to see him on stage. He’s one of those actors, who can make a whole scene just by changing his facial expression. He was amazing both as the Professor and the Master. And the transition looked so natural, it was actually scary. I avoid spoilers as much as I can, so I didn’t know what to expect. For a moment I thought he was the Doctor himself, stuck as a human being after an adventure with unhappy ending.

The teaser for next episode was all Saxon, and though not reveling that much.

How will they get out?
Will Jack be able to return to Earth in Tardis (assuming they get it back), if it react so violently in his presence? And will he able to ever travel with the Doctor again?
Is everything between Jack and Doctor cleared up?

It's not as coherent as I wish it was, but I'm still sick and on pretty strong drugs. Add a good portion of exctitement, and that's what you get... ;-)

I think I'll go watch it again, just to make sure I have proper (ekhem...) dreams tonight.
